substiutional heirs

Explanation:
Well, gee!
That's the same answer as for "Nacherben". I'll be!
I do have a feeling there is no difference legally between "Nacherben" and "Ersatzerben". I Kim's suggestion "alternate heirs" is very good.

"If there are no descendants, then each of the alternate heirs are substitutional heirs with regard to one another."

That's what I would make of it.

alternate heir

Explanation:
I agree with Kim Metzger. This is the term used in the U.S. It's a "person appointed to be heir in the event that a first appointed heir is unable or unwilling to accept the inhreitance (in case of death or disclaimer before or after the death of the decedent)."

in support of Kim's and "rosef"'s suggestion: alternate heirs

Explanation:
Here's the statutory definition of "Ersatzerbe" and the "Auslegungsregel":

Section 2096, Buergerliches Gesetzbuch:

alternate heirs, substitutional heirs

Explanation:
“Alternate heir” is by far the most frequently used term. Here is an example:

http://www.lawclerks.com/HTML/willsQ.html

“ALTERNATE HEIR (S): Name all of the individuals who will receive your assets should the primary heir predecease you. If there are no alternatives, the property will return to your estate to be included in the gift to the remaining heir (s). If you have more than 5 alternative heirs, let us know in the comments section.”

I was able to find only one reference for “substitutional heir”:

http://www.elwing.de/Lexikon_D-E.html

“Ersatzerbe: substitutional heir.”

Just to confirm a few answers above:

Nacherbe = reversion/reversionary heir

Ersatzerbe = substitute/alternate heir
