German to English translations [Non-PRO] Law/Patents
German term or phrase:dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass
I am translating the 'Ansprüche' section of a patent document for flexible packaging. Each paragraph starts:
'Flexible Verpackung dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass'..... Is there a correct phrase in English for this patent terminology?
Explanation: U.S. patents don't really have an equivalent phrasing for this, but each instance of this phrase legally means "this is a patentable property of this object or process." Most translations I've read render the phrase as "characterized by the fact," or some similar device.
