Law/Patents
German term or phrase: 1. Staatsexamen; 2. Staatsexamen; Referendariat
In a CV on internet -
referring to legal training.

I think I need to functionally gloss this.
Does anyone have any better suggestions than
Law degree; professional legal qualification; vocational training?
Would using 'articles'/ 'articled clerkship'for Referendariat be too country specific (and therefore non-transferable)/out of date?
I would appreciate all your thoughts on this one.

First State Exam etc., Traineeship

Explanation:
Although there does not seem to be one generally agreed upon translation, you would often find the above terms used in CVs. However, in many cases the authors/translators choose to use the German terms, which are known and understood internationally. In a CV it might indeed be better to use the German terms and add a short English explanation in brackets.

state examination

Explanation:
You may have a look at the European Glossary on Education, volume 1, Examinations, Qualifications and Titles published by the Eurydice European Unit:

Staatsexamen
Country: Germany
Grammatical variants: Staatsexamina
Level of education: Higher
Explanatory note:
Synonym of Staatsprüfung.

Staatsprüfung
Country: Germany
Grammatical variants: Staatsprüfungen, Staatsprüfung*
Level of education: Higher
Explanatory note:
Final examination for university courses of study leading to professions in which there is a particular public interest, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, food chemistry and jurisprudence, and courses leading to the teaching profession.
When they have passed the examination, candidates in medical and pharmaceutical courses can apply in writing for the Approbation that will entitle them to practise the profession and use the professional title. The Erste Staatsprüfung (first State examination) usually consists of a written dissertation and written and oral examinations, but there are variations specific to individual Länder. It is usually both an academic and a vocational qualification. An additional Vorbereitungsdienst (preparatory service) leading to the Zweite Staatsprüfung (second State examination) is compulsory after the Erste Staatsprüfung for students studying to become teachers or lawyers. Only this Zweite Staatsprüfung gives access to these professions, as teachers or judges.
The Zweite Staatsprüfung usually consists of a dissertation and written and oral examinations, but there are variations specific to each Land. Practical experience from the Vorbereitungsdienst is also included in this examination.
Synonym: Staatsexamen.

2 hrs
first/second state examination; legal internship program

Explanation:
In my own CV I use the terms first and second state examinations, or even add "law" or "legal". These exams are too dissimilar to what is e.g. known in the US as a law degree. Therefore, I would just either leave the German terms as someone already suggested or translate basically literally.

Best regards!

4 hrs
state-administered exam; internship

Explanation:
This must be passed by doctors and lawyers (where the public interest is involved). For doctors, Refendariat is "residency", in the legal profession "junior lawyer", "intern" is any one out of school getting his/her feet wet.

"lawclerk" for senior judges (PS don't say "examination" in place of exam)
