I have found an explanation for this but was wondering whether there was an English equivalent. this appears on a marriage certificate. Is it the same as the 'births, marriages and deaths registry'? Thanks for any help Claire

Family register
Explanation:
Not really: when two people marry, they receive a "Familienbuch" from the registry office, in which all important events are then recorded, e.g. marriage, births of children etc. There isn't really an English equivalent, so I have suggested "family register" or "genealogical register."

Agreement with family register

Explanation:
Family register is what is officially used. I just pulled mine out and looked and since we have "international versions" of everything, it has been handily translated by the state and I confirm the above suggestion. HTH, Will

Nothing better, just more info

Explanation:
Since 1958 the same information has been found in the Family Register = Familienbuch as was previously to be found in a certificate of descent = Abstammungsurkunde. This applies to West Germany. I am not sure what these things were called in the old GDR. Since 1958 was shortly before the building of the Wall, they may have used Abstammungsurkunde up to 1990 or so.
