German to English translations [PRO]
Law/Patents
German term or phrase: Slg.
It is in the context of European Court case law and is used when giving examples of precedents. So, for instance, we have (EuGH, Slg. 1976, 811, 812) etc. How should this best be translated?

English translation:"Report" or "Rep."
Explanation:
Normally boian would be absolutely right. "Slg." = "Sammlung" = "collection" = "coll.", but apparently not in the case of the European Parliament or European Commission.

The following references from a European Parliament working paper in English:

http://www.europarl.eu.int/workingpapers/soci/pdf/105_en.pdf

and the same paper in German:

http://www.europarl.eu.int/workingpapers/soci/pdf/105_de.pdf

show that for some strange reason, "Slg." is translated with "Rep.":

Vgl. z.B. EuGH v. 27.10.1998, RS 411/96-Boyle-, Slg.1998, S.6401, Rn. 39 bzw. EuGH v. 14.2.1995, RS 279/93-Schumacker-, Slg. 1995, S.225, Rn. 30. Ausführlich zum Begriff der Diskriminierung im EG-Recht: Ellis, "The Definition of Discrimination in EC Sex Equality Law", European Law Review 1994, S.563 ff.

Cf. e.g. European Court of Justice of 27.10.1998, C-411/96 - Boyle -, Rep. 1998, p. 6401, margin note 39 or European Court of Justice of 14.2.1995, C-279/93 - Schumacker -, Rep. 1995, p. 225, margin note 30. In detail on the concept of discrimination in EC law: Ellis, "The Definition of Discrimination in European Community Sex Equality Law", European Law Review 1994, p. 563 ff.

The European Commission does it a bit differently; they spell out "Report" in the English version:

http://dg3.eudra.org/F2/eudralex/vol-1/pdfs-en/820115en.pdf

and in the same paper in German, "Slg." is used:

Whether you spell it out or abbreviate it appears to be your call. The Parliament places "Rep." before the year but the Commission places "Report" after the year.
