German term or phrase: "zu den Wegen hin"
I'm not sure precisely how to put "zu den Wegen hin ", although I have no problem in understanding what it means:

My draft translation so far:

An easily removable railing is to be placed 1 meter away from the plant zu den Wegen hin to prevent the light barrier from being triggered inadvertently by visitors or employees.

I'm not happy with "in the direction of the paths" or "towards the paths."

agree  Armorel Young: The best of those options is "facing the paths" - we can't really say "along the paths" as we don't know how far back from the path the railing is to be set.
