German term or phrase: Schrauber
"Schrauber" is usually negative, but I need some positive, negative and neutral terms or expressions for people who spend a lot of time working on their cars. They install accessories, clean and polish the car and make repairs. A real "Schrauber" would never think of allowing a service station or car dealer to change the oil in his car. "Car nut" and "automobile enthusiast" have occurred to me so far, any other ideas?

car nuts, etc.
Explanation:
Here are confirmations of a few I had heard of. I'm sure there are many more out there, if I run into any more I'll pass them on.

Thank you one and all. Lots of good suggestions. It is too bad we cannot divide up these points a bit. But since we can't, I have to give them all to Beth because she gave me the most options. - Dan

car buff

Explanation:
"Car buff" seems to be a rather commonly used term. "Car enthusiast" comes to mind, too, but I'd say car buff is the more commonly used term in the US.

car buff - a person who loves to repair or restore cars

petrol head

Explanation:
I guess this is off the mark, being more fanatic than uel's 'car buff' which I think is a good suggestion.
I guess 'petrol head' also connotes more of car or motor bike racing, doesn't it?

gearhead

Explanation:
This is a more general term than car buff-- it applies to anyone who's really into machinery or hardware of any type, including computer hardware.

Another, less formal way you can put it is to say that so and so is "really into cars."
