German term or phrase: Sympathieträger
"Die Unternehmen verwenden die Lizenz als Promotion Tool, Premium, Sympathieträger oder zur Produktinnovation."
It's about a comic figure that can be used as "Sympathieträger".
Can anyone help?

English translation:Mascot
Explanation:
The idea is to provide a figure that is readily identifiable and whose characteristics can be related to the product by the consumer. For example, one of the hamburger chains in the US licensed "Beanie Babies" to attract young customers. They cashed in on the fad to be able to sell their otherwsie dubious products. A battery manufacturer in the US has used a battery operated toy as its mascot for decades.

Thank you for your helpful posting. In the end, I used a mixture of your and Matthew's suggestion, i.e. "endearing mascot". It fitted best.
Thank you all!

having endearing qualities / endearing quality

Explanation:
The quality of the German sentence notwithstanding, I feel the concept of "Sympathie" in the German is close to the adjective "sympatisch" as in "personable, friendly, instilling feelings of affinity". I would tend not to want to read a sense of "compassion for someone suffering" into it -- which is, imho, not intended.

That's why I feel the phrase needs to be re-worked in English so that the "mascot" (your comicbook figure) seems to have this appealing quality evoked in the potential buyer/customer.
