German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.)
German term or phrase: Auffaserungstechnologie
This comes in a text about the processing of residues from hemp plants. The research project will include "die Entwicklung der Auffaserungstechnologie der Hanfschäben". I assume it has something to do with a technology used for breaking down the fibres of the hemp hurds; can anyone help?
Heather
English translation:fraying technology/unravelling technology
Explanation:
You are correct in your presumption that this has something to do with breaking down the fibers in the hemp - most likely in order to make cloth. Just "auffasern" is "to ravel out or fray" (usually woven material) - the rest of my definition derives from that building block. My sources are Ernst's Wörterbuch der indust. Technik, The Concise Oxford Dictionary and (oddly enough) an Ikea catalog my wife was just reading. HTH, Will
