Tech/Engineering - Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.)
German term or phrase: Holzwerkstoff
Here we are fighting with tradition. A symposium has been running here in Germany for many years now under the German name is "Das Holzwerkstoff-Symposium". Because technical and marketing people from all over the world come to this event, somebody invented the English name "Particle Board Symposium" a long time ago. Unfortunately, "particle board" is only one type of "Holzwerkstoff", so we now want to change the English name to better translate the German term.

I have found the following possibilities:

"wood-based panels" - Pfleiderer - (for me, still too specific)

http://www.pfleiderer.de/pfleiderer_eng/produkte/produkte.ht...

"wood-based materials" - FIS-ELF - Fachinformationssystem Ernährung, Land- und Forstwirtschaft, 1997 Ein Informationsservice der ZADI - Zentralstelle für Agrardokumentation und –information

http://www.dainet.de:8080/ELFSTW-EN/DDW?W=STICHWORT INC '0-...

"derived timber products" - Ernst – Wörterbuch der industriellen Technik

"timber construction systems/products" - College of Architecture - Georgia Institute of Technology

http://www.arch.gatech.edu/archprog/html/program/undergrad/c...

Does anyone have any other suggestions or preferences among the above?

TIA - Dan

Just going through some ancient questions...:)

'After all that's been said and done',I would indeed go for 'derived timber products'.

The Wood/Timber Construction (Products) Symposium

Explanation:
Just a suggestion, but it captures what you need, the fact that both wood (and its 'derivatives) and construction are mentioned.
Maybe also 'The Wood-Based Construction Products Symposium' (maybe already too long).

Anyhow, professionals will sure know what it's all about...

wood materials/wood-based materials

Explanation:
wood materials if the symposium deals with products and processes that includes wood substance materials like from planks to chips or even saw dust.
(Suggestion: WOODMA)

wood-based materials if it includes processed wood in the form of derivatives like terpentine, tar etc.

BTW: What's 'TIA'?

Composite wood products (just another suggestion)

Explanation:
I'm trying to be truly generic and thinking of those panels submitted to fireproofing, sound-proofing and insulation procedures, not to mention the composite wood that sculptors are increasingly obliged to use (planks glued together) to make solid objects.
This reminds me of a problem that arose in the Holzwerkstätte of the Bauhaus around the 20's-30's when mixed media became inevitable in construction and furniture.

Are there any more suggestions?

Explanation:
Thank you all for your answers so far.

I do not know how to grade this for the following reasons:

1. I think we should not use the word "construction" because these "Holzwerkstoffe" are also used for furniture, etc.

2. "Composite" makes me think there is some other important material besides wood and resin involved, perhaps plastic or metal. If my feeling is correct then simple chipboard or particleboard might even be excluded by the word "composite".

3. Neither turpentine nor planks are covered by the term I am looking for.

Now that I have more or less rejected all three answers received up until now, I will just have to wait for something else. I am leaning toward the Ernst – Wörterbuch der industriellen Technik term:

"derived timber products"

What do you think of that term?

"TIA" means "Thanks in advance"

wood = derived timber material

Explanation:
Objection Your Honour!
I think you have gone over the river to fetch water here! (Swedish saying)
'Derived timber product' i a less usable concoction for my answer!
My forestry expert laughed when he heard your decision.
AND Werkstoff definitely is NOT = product, it's = material
