Flansch mit Kraftnebenschluss = metal to metal (contact) type
Jetzt fehlt nur noch gekammert mit Krafthauptschluss ;-)

heißt, wie von Johannes richtig bemerkt, dass die Kräfte über die Dichtung gehen. Das kann allerdings auch bei gekammerten Varianten wie Nut/Feder und Vor-/Rücksprung der Fall sein. Die Kammerung verhindert, dass die Dichtung herausgedrückt (das sog. Ausblasen) werden kann. Beim Kraftnebenschluss läuft die Linie an der Dichtung vorbei, weil die Dichtung in ihrer Kammer keine Kräfte überträgt, sondern nur dichten muss.

Well, yes, maybe the problem here is really the difference in concepts, or looking at this. I have found several English documents (translated from German) which use "main-load" and "off-load" to differentiate between Krafthaupt- und Kraftnebenschluss (KHS/KNS) "Only a gasket combination corresponding with the Kempchen double sealing system KHS/KNS (with one gasket in the main-load and the other in the off-load), is capable to solving this problem." But this sound a bit like a literal translation to me.<br>

from a gasket maker, and in line with my perceptions. But I cannot see, where the "Kraftnebenschuss" (or its english equivalent) is described. "Kraftnebenschluss" can only mean that the clamping force is not transmitted through the gasket, but through the bolts and flanges. Use of raised flanges to obtain a "rigid assembly" instead of "floating assembly" is one mean.
Unfortunately, this article gives no translation for "Kraftnebenschluss", either.

In the following very infomative document (p. 3), this is called a 'metal-to-metal' or 'rigid' assembly, as Bernd also suggested in his later added note:<br> "...a ‘rigid’ assembly, is where metal to metal contact occurs after bolting. An example of a ‘rigid’ assembly can be illustrated by an O-ring in a recess. Once the flanges have achieved a metal-to-metal contact, then further tightening of the bolts against the system pressure has no further effect upon the sealing element."

Aber der Ausdruck "Kraftnebenschluss" ist mir in meiner 40-jährigen Beruftstätigkeit noch nicht bewußt begegnet. Auch in Wörterbüchern (z.B. im Kucera mit 220.000 Einträgen, bei Leo oder bei IATE) konnte ich diesen nicht finden.

bedeutet bei Flanschverbindungen, dass die Schrauben nicht durch die Dichtfläche/Dichtungen geführt sind, sondern weiter außen. Das ist beileibe kein konstruierter Begriff.
