Es handelt sich um einen Versuch mit Baumwolle:
"...verschiedene Versuche mit Baumwolle wurden an 2 Spinnstellen ausgesponnen."

Bei meiner Suche im Internet fand ich verschiedene Übersetzungen, die den Ausdruck auch im englischen Text verwenden, und dann einige die dafür "to out spiders" benutzten. Ist beides korrekt?
