German to English translations [PRO] Medical
German term or phrase:"anlegen" of the pneumoperitoneium
The following has two instances where the term is used. It is from a German medical journal discussing the surgery for morbidly obese patients.
In 12 cases (3.2%) during the initial phase, there were serious injuries to the liver to some extent, during the Anlegen of the pneumoperitoneium by means of Veress canals, which in no case led to conversion. As of Patient No. 13, the pneumoperitoneium was easily angelegt with the help of the Visiport system (Figure 2). Small hemorrhages and lesions in the area of the liver, caused mostly by the retractor, could be stopped by means of bipolar coagulation forceps and fibrin adhesives, or else they stopped by themselves and had no further consequences.
Explanation: Pneumoperitoneum apparently has two meanings according to Pschymbrel Medical Lexicon. One is "Gasansammlung in Peritonealraum" or diagn.-therap. P. - Insufflation von Gas, which is "Einblasen von Gasen bei Laparoskopie". My guess is that Anlegen refers to the insufflation of gas. I am not sure however. Normally, Anlegen can be translated as "application of ". Hope this helped a little.

Explanation: An intraperitoneal injection is the introduction of gas, e.g. air, CO2, N2O,(= the Pneumoperitoneum) for diagnostic purposes, into the abdominal cavity. Langenscheidt has apply as a possible meaning for anlegen.
Here Anlegen is what you have to do, using the means indicated, to get this gas into the abdominal cavity. So I think the best word is the "introduction" of the gas=Pmeumoperitoneum. Application, apply and injection, inject would also work.

Explanation: The pneumoperitoneum here is the pre-operative insufflation of gas into the abdominal cavity. Crudely, the patientis is blown up like a balloon so the surgeon can see clearly through the "port" into the body and get at what he needs to operate on!
I did a search for "Visiport" (an optical trocar or cannula system)and found the actual phrase "the pneumoperitoneum is established...". For a helpful site see URL below, and follow link to "Laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy".
