The spinal cord and lower brainstem are not only important for carrying information to and from the brain but also for motor control which is ultimately expressed by a range of spinal cord and lower brainstem reflexes and ‘pattern generators’. The essential nature of reflexes can be understood by concentrating on the monosynaptic stretch reflex. The highly adaptive nature of this reflex is due to the interaction between the ‘alpha’ and ‘gamma’ (spindle) control systems. Direct control over motor activity can come from the cortex. But structures such as the Basal Ganglia (which is also involved in the conditioned learning of reflex sequences) can influence the motor system through the gamma ‘loop’. Another important central control system is the Cerebellum which also uses the gamma loop and is involved in the expression and control of fast reflex sequences by monitoring and comparing ‘afferent’ and ‘efferent activites’. (It is also apparently the structure that inhibits the ‘self-tickle’ response).
