disagree  Geraldine O'Sullivan: This is difficult to translate precisely, the above comment describes the situation. I would suggest something like "massive gastric dilatation [or distension] with retention of stomach contents" (though the last bit is not really necessary).

  -> I looked at the (few) German sites describing Retentionsmagen and they point to gastric retention and/or bowel obstruction!

agree  MMUlr: But here "gastric retention" may be correct; Retentionsmagen is the clinical finding as consequence of gastric retention. IMO
