German to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical: Health Care
German term or phrase: Arzt im Praktikum
In a Weiterbildungszeugnis: Herr - war vom - bis - als Arzt im Praktikum beschäftigt. What would be an appropriate translation - to be read by a GB future employer?

English translation:Junior House Officer
Explanation:
Junior House Officers are practicing doctors in their first year after graduation. The GMC officially recognises AiP as Junior House Officer.

Intern is equivalent to PJ (Praktisches Jahr)which is a student status.

This is from the horse's mouth! (having made the same switch at this stage)

Intern

Explanation:
An intern is defined as a doctor who is serving an apprenticeship as an assitant resident in a hospital, generally just after graduation from medical school (Webster's). I say that because I sometimes confuse intern and resident, the latter referring to a doctor serving a period of advanced medical or surgical training at a hospital.

Preregistration post

Explanation:
This is also relatively authoritative, the British Medical Journal from the British Medical Association:

http://classified.bmj.com/careerfocus/7100cf.htm -

"Preregistration posts - Those who wish to practice medicine must work for 18 months as an Arzt im Praktikum, which is analogous to preregistration posts in the United Kingdom." -

"Intern" is a commonly used American term for something of this nature but "intern" doesn't show up in the BMJ.

Trainee Doctor

Explanation:
To avoid using Americanisms such as "Intern" and to avoid being too specific, you could use "Trainee Doctor" as an option.
