German term or phrase: Bürgersaal
"Citizens' room" doesn't sound right, but I'm not sure what we'd call it in English.
In Altdorf bei Landshut wurde dringend ein Mehrzweckgebäude für unterschiedliche Gemeinde-Einrichtungen benötigt. Inzwischen ist der von Regierungsbaumeister Gerald Püttmann gestaltete Neubau fertig: Er beherbergt nicht nur einen Bürgersaal, der durch viel Holz eine einladende Atmosphäre schafft, sondern auch einen Kinderhort, eine Schule sowie eine Bücherei.

Explanation:
These both conjure up an image which isn't entirely cosy and wooden, but they're the best I can do at the moment.

I think the expression "community hall" crossed my mind, but I dismissed it as I wasn't sure whether we use it. However, they do say that great minds think alike!!
