German to English translations [PRO]
German term or phrase: eine Ethnie
Der problematische Dreiklang von Ethnie, Nation und Staat

( This means an "ethno-group" but in the above heading it is not used in exactly the same way as elsewhere in the text - a more formal term is required. Unable to find a good translation in an English dictionary. The book I am translating deals with ethnic muslim states in Bosnia-Herzegovina and India.)
Karin Lorenc
English translation:Ethnie
Explanation:
Ethnie is another word for ethnic community. A loosely bound group of people whose shared identity is related to culture, history and/or language, but whose relationship to teritory and statehood is moe indeterminate than a nation.

Source: The Ethnic Origin of Nations by A.D. Smith (1986).

Although caro used the same word in her explanation/translation it cleared up an important question for me. Amazingly, the reference she gave is also used by the author of the text that I am translating. Thus I knew for certain that this was the correct definition and that the word ethnie does in fact exist.I have since discovered that it is a relatively new term.

ethnicity, ethnic belonging

Explanation:
Ethnicity is probably the best translation, and I have found the term in many publications that deals with people's ethnic background. Hope that helps.

ethnos

Explanation:
This is a tough nut, as it never occurs as a noun! All I can suggest is to revert to the original Greek and calling it "ethnos". Hope this helps.

"ethnicity" and "ethnie" both sound great, with maybe "a people" or "the peoples" for variety

Explanation:
Duden refers to "Stamm" or "Volk" when defining "Ethnie" so I think you could also use "people". I am afraid I do not quite understand what Ani means about "as it never occurs as a noun!" In NODE "Ethnicity", "a people" and "the peoples" are all nouns. The only thing wrong with "ethnie" in English is that it could sound suspicious to the customer. Although it is definitely used (over 300 hits in Alta Vista, in English, but many were names), it is often used in quotation marks and does not show up in NODE.

Ethnicity, ethnic group

Explanation:
