German to English translations [PRO]
German term or phrase: 1. Philologische Staatsprüfung
This is from a CV. Here's the context:

Ausbildung/ Grundwehrdienst

Promotion Physik 5. Juli 1988

2. Philologische Staatsprüfung 5. Dez. 1983
1. Philologische Staatsprüfung 27. April 1981

Studium Physik/ Mathematik Aachen, Bonn und Bochum, 1974 - 1980

Grundwehrdienst Juli 1972 - September 1973

Abitur 17. Mai 1972, Bonn

Does anyone know why this is called a "philologische" state examination when we're apparently talking about physics and/or math here? And is there a standard English translation for this? Thanks.

Initial examination/final examination or intermediary/final

Explanation:
Higher education in Germany is spilt into intermediary and final stages. The two entries of the CV could refer that and/or to initial teacher training which requires completion of two Staatspruefungen.
