German to English translations [PRO]
German term or phrase: Hacken und Schaufeln
Das Göttinger Traditionsunternehmen baut vielmehr die "Hacken und Schaufeln" für den Goldrausch des 21. Jahrhunderts - den Biotech-Boom.
This appears in the profile for a company who manufactures weighing, separation and hydrodynamic bearing technology solutions. In the previous sentence it has been siad that they are not involved with developing new medicines.

English translation:...concentrating more/instead on designing the picks and shovels for the gold rush of the 21st ...
Explanation:
I thought you only wanted the right translation for "Hacken und Schaufeln" = "picks and shovels", but everyone else seems to want to translate the whole sentence so I would like to show off a little too:

"The Götting enterprise is concentrating more/instead on designing the picks and shovels for the gold rush of the 21st century – the biotech boom."

pickaxes and shovels

Explanation:
I think a completely literal translation of this metaphor based on the goldrush works just as well in English as in German, i.e. the company is building the "pickaxes and shovels" for the goldrush of the 21st century - the quotation markes show that it isn't meant to be taken literally.

Explanation:
Since the company no doubt prides itself on building state-of-the-art, precision tools, it's appropriate to express this in the profile.

pickaxes and shovels

Explanation:
- namely the tools used by those who dug for gold in the gold rushes of the 19th century.

Here is a suggestion - I dare say it should be worked on (I'd love to do it if I had the rest of the profile - sounds as if it might be interesting!):

Instead, the old-established Göttingen-based company makes the "pickaxes and shovels" for the goldrush of the 21st century - the biotech boom.

"picks and shovels"

Explanation:
I think the term is "picks and shovels" as at these Australian, US and New Zealand sites

http://www.museumca.org/goldrush/silver-pick49er.html

http://www.fourteenernet.com/goldrush/

http://www.bungy.co.nz/history/index.htm

http://www.ccentre.wa.gov.au/html/pt_3_vi__the_goldrush.html

http://www.notfrisco.com/calmem/goldrush/marshall.html

A "pickaxe" is often literally a tool with both an axe blade and a pick point. Most of the gold rush miners referred to just a "pick" because at one end of the iron head is a sharp point and at the other end a narrow chisel point. This fits the NODE description also.

This site about modern prospecting equipment does not use "ax" or "axe" anywhere but has several different "picks":

nuts and bolts

Explanation:
Just to add that "nuts and bolts" is, of course, the typical English expression for saying the same thing.
