German term or phrase: Fördermitglied
Someone is a 'Fördermitglied der Max Planck Gesellschaft'. Patron/sponsor?

English translation:supporting member
Explanation:
Patron, sponsor, supporting member, sustaining member - any of those would work. Often there are hierarchies of giving - supporting member being the lowest rank in the hierarchy, then sustaining member, sponsor, patron. (This is the way, for instance, that the Lake Tahoe Festivals are set up). Maybe the safest, most generic term would be "supporting member".
