German term or phrase: Freyung
Schottenstift auf der Freyung.

This is one of the recommended sights of Vienna. 2 questions: Stift- a seminary or a chapter? And is Freyung a proper name, for what?

English translation:Monastery
Explanation:
Sorry for some reason I could not see Schottenstift on my screen the first time! THis is what I found: Another major art collection is that of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Scots (Schottenstift). The Benedictine abbey was founded as early as 1155, and up until the beginning of the fifteenth century membership was open exclusively to monks from Ireland, Scotia maior in Latin, hence the name of the monastery. For many years important works of art were kept in the monastery storerooms, until the new museum was finally opened in 1995 to accommodate the treasures and make them accessible to the public.

Freyung Square

Explanation:
It would appear to be a square in Vienna which was also the subject of a painting by Bellotto. "This odd shaped “square” takes its name from the term “a place of asylum.” Indeed, in former times the monks granted fugitives the right of sanctuary. In the center of Freyung stands the Austria-Brunnen, a nineteenth century fountain with allegorical figures that represent the four main rivers of the monarchy: the Danube, Po, Elbe, and Vistula. All the monarchal rivers are crowned by a fifth allegorical figure, a representation of Austria." (See: http://www.10best.com/CG/bizBasics.process/MID_142/CID_17/SI... As regards Stift, one needs more context. It could be either a cathedral chapter or a seminary. In such cases, however, you can quickly find out which is meant by surfing the web. There are lots of sites dealing with Vienna!!!
Good luck!

Yes

Explanation:
The Freyung is indeed a large square in central Vienna, and the monastery, also the home of a well-known school, is on the square.
