Most famous church and landmark of Vienna. Initially built as Romanesque basilica with three naves and consecrated presumably in 1147 by bishop Reginbert of Passau as parish church in honor of Saint Stephen. In 1221 first mention in a document. Around 1240 the church received the round arched late Romanesque funnel-shaped portal, in 1303-1340 the Gothic high choir, the so-called Albertinian choir, was built in the place of the Romanesque choir. Inside the church and on its outer walls there are a multitude of important sculptures, tombstones and monuments.<<
