German term or phrase: Kirchenschweizer
This word appears in a letter describing a visit to a German cathedral:
Der vorne knieende Domkapitular muss wohl esrtaunt gewesen sein, während die anwesenden Beter und die Aufsicht habenden Kirchenschweizer sehr erbaut waren.
I have never heard of this (profession/title?) before and would appreciate any leads!

the members of the local Swiss Guard

Explanation:
Schweizergarde (Swiss Guard) is the name of the corps of guards employed by the Vatican. Originally they were Swiss. But maybe this is not common knowledge.
How about Honorary Church Guards?

sexton, sacristan, verger

Explanation:
Following Tom's lead, a synonym would be "Kirchendiener". According to Langenscheidt, there are three possible translations into English.

"Verger" is chiefly British usage; so, depending on your target audience, choose wisely. Personally, I would go with sacristan, as this seems to be the more traditional and universal word in English.
