German term or phrase: Energiegeräteelektroniker
. . . as in what a student at the age of 17 would be apprenticing for. Is "electrician" sufficient, or is something that includes "energy devices" obligatory? Unless I'm missing the boat on what exactly is meant by energy devices, I equate energy with electricity in these kinds of context, and if I added something like that, it would be redundant. Any thoughts on this? Too, the same student took and passed his "Abschlussprüfung" before the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce at age 20. Is that test similar to a journeyman's exam?

English translation:Electrotechnician
Explanation:
An electrician only lmays wires and cables. An electronics techncian works on devices and installations.
"Abschlußprüfung" I would simply translate as "final examination", unless your sure that it is a journeyman's occupation and type of education.

Thanks so much for explaining the difference between an electrician and an electrotechnician. That helped tremendously. I agree with your suggestion (and that of others) regarding the exam, too. To use "journeyman" would be pushing the envelope a bit.

Thanks again.

Energy device electrician

Explanation:
"Electrician" is not enough. This word describes a specialist for industrial electronics. I suppose "energy devices" are used to distribute and regulate the flow of electric energy. From my study of physics I know that if high amounts of energy are to be regulated, special electronics are necessary to avoid destruction of circuits or switches.

The "Abschlussprüfung" is the final exam, so it is at least comparable to a journeyman's exam.
