German to English translations [PRO]
German term or phrase: Stenokontoristin
This is a term from a resume. Although I've heard it before, I don't know what this position entails in terms of duties/responsibilities, or what the English equivalent might be.
The phrase reads:
"Ausbildung zur Stenokontoristin"
Thanks for any help, Beth.

English translation:stenographer
Explanation:
This is literally a female stenographer, but in English, it would be unusual to include the female part. The duties would be to know how to work with a stenograph - a machine which types shorthand. HTH, Will

Thanks, everyone. It was the "-kontorist" part that threw me off.

female shorthand-typist in a business office

Explanation:
The German word Stenokontoristin is described in the Fremdwörterbuch of the Grosse Duden. It does NOT refer to stenotyping, which is a proprietary form of machine shorthand used in courts in England and the US. The word refers to a stenographer, that is a person trained in shorthand and shorthand transcription (usually into typed material), in a Kontor, that is a business office. The ending -in indicates that a woman is desired for the job.
