German term or phrase:Habilitationsschrift
Is there a good (concise) way of saying this in (American or British) English without having to paraphrase it, i.e. post-doctoral thesis required to teach at a German university? The only thing I can come up with is "pre-professorate thesis", but it doesn't really sound very English!
3. To have a scientific career at a German University, two dissertations are needed: the Ph.D. thesis and the "Habilitation" thesis. There is no American equivalent to the German Habilitation, as the academic certification is awarded to an individual who already has a Ph.D. Habilitation is the highest scientific distinction in Germany.
Explanation: There is nothing like Habilitation in Am. or Br. English. Both my Oxford Dictionary and my Webster's don't include such a word.
However, Langenscheids GE-EN dictionary lists Habilitationsschrift as written above.
