German term or phrase: Amtsweg
Wenn einem Entscheidungsträger bei X, Y oder Z der Schuh drückt, wird der Amtsweg zugunsten eines direkten Kontakts mit der Ministerin umgangen.

Anybody got any suggestions on how to deal with this one. It's reported speech, so should be relatively informal.

I can see what the basic meaning is, that they cut out the bureacracy and get to the point, but I can't find a way of saying it that doesn't sound stilted. Any ideas?

TIA

... the established/prescribed procedures are relaxed to allow direct contact with the Minister ...
Explanation:
I do not believe "authority" will work in this particular situation because the Minister herself is an "authority". Besides that, the "Amtsweg" is a prescribed method or procedure, not a place.

Another possibility might be to write "... the established/prescribed procedures are relaxed to allow direct contact with the Minister ...".

Thanks to everyone who answered. They were all good answers. The points go to Dan for providing two good answers! Part of what worried me about the sentence was the passive nature of it. It wasn't the companies that were cutting through the red tape as such, more that the red tape was being swept aside to make things easier for them. But you've all given me some useful stuff and I suspect my final answer will have elements of a few different answers ...

32 mins peer agreement (net): +1
to bypass or circumvent (the) official channels

Explanation:
The German text seems rather formal to me and normally good indirect speech should reflect the style of the original.

If you feel that "to cut through (the) red tape" is perhaps too informal or negative in tone, "to bypass or circumvent (the) official channels" might be an alternative.

authority

Explanation:
,...the authorities are bypassed....

In this particular case, the "Amtsweg" obviously is the place they should be going to, but did not. In the US, "authority" would be used in everyday language.

Have a good one!
