German term or phrase: Kopfweide
A type of willow tree which is apparently cultivated in such a way that the branches are cut off to create a bulb-shaped stump, from which much smaller branches will then shoot (feel sorry for this tree...). However, can anyone suggest an appropriate name in English?

English translation:coppiced willow
Explanation:
The technique of coppicing promotes growth of thin stems from an established stump and is used with chestnut trees to grow wood for stakes. With willows it produces particularly thin shoots, which are then harvested and treated for basket weaving. Such growers are called osiers and once abounded in the area where I live. Where a tree is allowed to develop a distinct trunk before mutilation, the technique is known as polling. HTH

pollarding

Explanation:
I beg to differ. It's 'pollarding', not 'polling'. A 'Kopfweide' is a 'pollarded willow' or a 'pollard willow'

OTOH a polled goat is a goat w/o horns.

Regards,
Ute
