German term or phrase: Erreichbarkeit
I don't know if this is a technical question or a business question so I'll call it "other".
This is the sentence from the same discussion about mobile phone popularity:
"availability" and "accessibility" are easy but I would like to use "reachability" because the person with the mobile phone can transmit or receive the "ping" anytime or anywhere.
Do you think "reachability" is definitely only for technical stuff like backbones or could it be used figuratively for people too?????????
As Dave Miller once put it, reachability is important because:
"Most people have the attention span of a ferret on two cappuccinos."
Most of the other Google hits seemed to be purely technical.
What do you think?
some research on reachability
below are some google results to back up reachable, but things don't look so good for reachability
though it seems to me that if you can use the adjective for people, the noun should serve also, and it you're interested in pioneering, then more the better
as far as the catch phrase goes:
Being in touch anytime and anywhere/anyplace, never missing (out on) anything, staying "in" -- that was the driving force/motivation that induced hundreds of millions of people to purchase ...
I hope this helped.

In the end the best translation for "Vereinsamung" still seemed to be "isolation" with the modifiers "progressive" and "social" to indicate what sort of isolation and that it was an ongoing, worsening situation – the "Ver" as Alexander mentioned. "Seclusion" and "solitude" seemed much too positive for this context. Although the NODE definition of "alienation" seemed to fit this situation quite well, I also had the feeling it might be too strong. I was afraid to use "desocialization" and "encapsulation" because I don't understand their meanings well enough to risk a confrontation with some psychologist or socialist out there somewhere.
As far as "Erreichbarkeit" goes, I finally did chicken out on "contactability" or "reachability". I would still have used "reachability", but I was worried that the customer might think it sounded like Deulish. Although I still think either term would be quite OK for any modern English text in any part of the world, in the end I used "reachable" in an imperative sentence. Alexander first mentioned "reachable" but Beth gave me the best references and examples, including the imperative usage.

Was war geschehen.

Within a few years, the mobile phone developed into a lifestyle product par excellence and honored Europe with its very own megamarket. What happened? The telecommunications axiom “transmit speech, data, images, anytime, anyplace” scored a direct hit on a basic need of our society. The leave-taking from large families in the industrialized world and the willingness to relocate for a new job gave birth to the phenomenon of progressive social isolation. Be reachable anytime anywhere, don’t miss anything, be “in”, this was the purchase motivation for hundreds of millions. The satisfaction of this basic human need to communicate caused the real breakthrough in the mobile phone business, not the much smaller business phone user component.
