German term or phrase: Erreichbarkeit
I don't know if this is a technical question or a business question so I'll call it "other".

This is the sentence from the same discussion about mobile phone popularity:

"Erreichbarkeit jederzeit an jedem Ort, um nichts zu verpassen und `in´ zu sein, dass war die Kauf-Motivation für Hunderte von Millionen Menschen."

"availability" and "accessibility" are easy but I would like to use "reachability" because the person with the mobile phone can transmit or receive the "ping" anytime or anywhere.

Do you think "reachability" is definitely only for technical stuff like backbones or could it be used figuratively for people too?????????

As Dave Miller once put it, reachability is important because:

"Most people have the attention span of a ferret on two cappuccinos."

http://www.pcd-innovations.com/law/id30.htm

Most of the other Google hits seemed to be purely technical.

What do you think?

TIA

below are some google results to back up reachable, but things don't look so good for reachability

though it seems to me that if you can use the adjective for people, the noun should serve also, and it you're interested in pioneering, then more the better

as far as the catch phrase goes:

how about:

Being in touch anytime and anywhere/anyplace, never missing (out on) anything, staying "in" -- that was the driving force/motivation that induced hundreds of millions of people to purchase ...

I hope this helped.

In the end the best translation for "Vereinsamung" still seemed to be "isolation" with the modifiers "progressive" and "social" to indicate what sort of isolation and that it was an ongoing, worsening situation – the "Ver" as Alexander mentioned. "Seclusion" and "solitude" seemed much too positive for this context. Although the NODE definition of "alienation" seemed to fit this situation quite well, I also had the feeling it might be too strong. I was afraid to use "desocialization" and "encapsulation" because I don't understand their meanings well enough to risk a confrontation with some psychologist or socialist out there somewhere.

As far as "Erreichbarkeit" goes, I finally did chicken out on "contactability" or "reachability". I would still have used "reachability", but I was worried that the customer might think it sounded like Deulish. Although I still think either term would be quite OK for any modern English text in any part of the world, in the end I used "reachable" in an imperative sentence. Alexander first mentioned "reachable" but Beth gave me the best references and examples, including the imperative usage.

contactability

Explanation:
I think this is less 'physical' than 'reachability', and may well work in your context.

A google search on contactability and 'mobile phones' comes up with quite a few hits, some of which are below for your perusal.

is always within reach / reachable

Explanation:
"reachability" makes for a strange structure of your context sentence (in my opinion).

"To always be within reach (reachable) at any location .. " sounds better, I think

Access -- and accessibility -- anytime, anywhere

Explanation:
The issue of course is to clearly communicate the meaning to the target audience, not to translate the word.

Reaching for words that are foreign to the vernacular, such as contactibility or reachability only impairs understanding rather than improving it (and makes for terrible English, especially in the noun form).

_Accessibility_ is not only easy but appropriate and understood, both at the technical and at the business levels. If you want to emphasize that the accessibility referred to is two-way, active and passive, paraphrase – as by saying >>Access -- and accessibility -- anytime, anywhere…<<

_Availability_ in my view is too general in meaning.

Erreichbarkeit: accessibility (number of outlets which can be reached from an inlet) Implicitly also: subscribers who can be reached
Ferretti, V., Wörterbuch der Elektronik, Datentechnik und Telekommunikation, ISBN 3 929510 01 4)

Erreichbarkeit: availability (tel. sys., mobile subscriber), accessibility

Google:
Searched English pages for "accessibility anywhere". Results 1 - 10 of about 74. Search took 0.27 seconds

reachability

Explanation:
Because the german word for availability is Verfuegbarkeit and for accessibility is Zugaenglichkeit.

If the author of the source text had meant either of availability or accessibility, he / she would have said so.

Hence, according to me, reachability, though technical, is suitable in this context.

more info on the question

Explanation:
I obviously did not give enough information with the first question so I'll try again.

All those old fogies (I can say such things because I'm one of the oldest fogies here at ProZ) who think "reachability" and "contactability" are non-words or new-fangled words or words nobody will understand or are foreign to the vernacular should have a look at some of these sites:

"personal reachability" : 60+ hits

http://www.google.com/search?as_q=&num=100&btnG=Google Searc...

"contactability" : 500+ hits

http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=o...

I also don't see that "reachability" or "contactability are any more difficult to say or write than "availability" or "accessibility" were when they were young. As far as readership understanding goes, the root words "reach" and "contact" are so unbelievably simple that it would be an insult to the readers' intelligence to infer that they won't get it. There is a lot to what Videsh said about the German words, too. I won over a customer in the early 80's here in Hamburg partly because he said I was easily "erreichbar". He said that "Erreichbarkeit" was very important to him because he had lots of little jobs to be done on short notice and needed to know quickly whether I could take on any given job or not. He was impressed that I had an answering machine and always called him back promptly. Such gizmos were not so common here at that time. The customer certainly did not mean I was without other customers/work or verfügbar or easy to approach or zugänglich. He meant I was easy to get in touch with.

I had forgotten "contactability" (Alzheimer's ya'know) or I probably would not have asked the question in the first place. I ran into the word a few years ago in a text on telecommunications. It was used in just such a context. If I can't get up the nerve to use "reachability", I will probably use "contactability" unless somebody can offer good technical reasons why either word should not be used.

What KudoZ answerers can never see is the entire context. This is unfortunate but presenting the entire text for each question would never work. In this case, the German is so Anglicized that I thought at first my source text was a translation from English into German. The author is trying to be extremely upbeat, modern, and international, even 'Merican. To use nothing but tired, everyday words my mother would understand would not be in keeping with the tone of my source text. The text was definitely not intended for my mother.

Hope this helps you help me.

TIA again,

Dan
