Answer... Explanation: ..."kunstwissenschaftlich tätig" means that he was engaged in the "science or study of art" - meaning he probably published scholarly papers, taught art, etc - but he was NOT an artist!!!! "Kunstwissenschaft" and "Kunst" and/or "Künstler" are completely different concepts! |

How about..... Explanation: ..."worked as an art scholar"? This would be the most general form I can think of. It covers teaching, writing and publishing scholarly papers or anything else "your heart desires". It would leave the readers of your translation as much room for imagination as the original does. |
