German to English translations [PRO]
German term or phrase: Tieflandsbucht
"Nahezu 30 km greift die 400 qkm große Guanabarabucht, sich nach innen erweiternd, in die Küstenebene ein. Zahlreiche Landzungen und über 70 größere und kleinere Inseln verleihen ihr das typische Gepräge einer Tieflandsbucht." A bay near Rio de Janeiro.

English translation:lowland bay
Explanation:
It is a rather literal translation, but I can't see what's wrong with it. I am from Scotland where we have a Highland and a Lowland, and Lowland means just this: geographically low down, near sea level. No steep mountains rise around the bays at the coast, the bays are flat and spread out. Not like Norwegian Fjords, for example.
Good luck,
Anita

Ah yes, sure. I was thinking more along the lines of the first answer, reading tieflandsbucht as "reaching far into the land", but you're probably right. Thanks a lot! Caro

HI,

Explanation:
instead of translating Tieflandsbucht literary (I haven't found a translation for it) I think I would just translate it as a bay typical of those that reach/spread far inland.
