German term or phrase: Create Index
This is a technical question; but I am sure somebody has an answer:
Is it possible to "create" an index (via the Insert menu) in MS Word 2000 using the paragraph numbers as refrence rather than the page numbers?
If so, how do I do this, please?

Explanation:
You could create a table with two columns. In the first column you type the name (or use a cross reference: (insert /cross reference/heading/ heading text) and in the second one you use a cross reference to the paragraph number (insert /cross reference/numbered item/paragraph number)

Thank you very much; I had already thought that the table solution would be best.

Create table of index / contents

Explanation:
No.
If you want to mark words in a paragraph, and then insert thzese in an index, you can do this, but not with the paragraph numbers. Such numbers are only assigned by way of a table of contents, where links are created to the numbered title of a paragraph.
One solution for you may be the creation of footnotes for each word, or perhapds a cross-reference to the next usage of a term.
To my knowledge, the index function itself does not permit a different key than the page number.
