setback loft or attic Explanation: This is just a guess, "zusammengestoppelt", as it were, from the various parts. For a definition of a zurückgesetztes Dachgeschoss, also called a Staffelgeschoss, see below: Ein Staffelgeschoss ist ein gegenüber den Außenwänden des Gebäudes zurückgesetztes oberstes Geschoss. Es ist dann ein Vollgeschoss, wenn es über mehr als 2/3 der Grundfläche des darunterliegenden Geschosses über eine Höhe von 2,3 m verfügt. Ein Dachgeschoss ist ein Geschoss mit geneigten Dachflächen. Um ein Vollgeschoss zu sein, müssen mehr als 3/4 seiner Grundfläche eine Höhe von 2,3m aufweisen. adding on to my earlier posting... recessed attic it is... Explanation: For whatever reason, this stuck with me... Searches on "Staffelgeschoss" didn't do much; archinform, the multilingual architectural database, coyly skirted the issue of Staffelgeschoss (everything else was translated, Staffelgeschoss was not). But, read on: Ernest Plilschke described the style of the building as "distinctly functional and modern, but does not ignore tradition entirely, and shows that a building can be modern without being in the least bizarre." The building, however, remains something of a mixture of parts. The Sullivanesque device of designing a building as podium, shaft, and cap is evident here in an understated way. Cornice lines mark out the divisions between first and fourth floors, and sixth and seventh floors. There is also a recessed attic storey.
