German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) / Digital photograph printing
German term or phrase: Ausbelichtung
The phrase below comes from an alphabetical list of isolated words and sentences for a photo printing website so unfortunately it lacks futher context. Everything else seems to refer to digital printing rather than analogue, but I don't know if that's always the case.

"Bei der Ausbelichtung und dem anschließenden Schneiden der Bilder kommt es zu Toleranzen. Diese können 2-3 mm betragen."

Many thanks for any help.

photographic printing of digital images
Explanation:
As opposed to inkjet or laser printing.

As mentioned in the discussion posts, it's all about getting analogue print quality from digital photos on special papers - for example baryte paper or archival papers (the results last for years without fading). The reference shows it offred by Whitewall for black and white photos shot with a Leica M Monochrom camera (before anyone complains, it IS without an "e " at the end)

BTW: I reckon what they mean here is as follows.
"Printing digital images on photographic paper and subsequent trimming may lead to size differences of up to 2-3 mm."

This is just to warn customers who order a certain format that the final print may be just a little bit smaller than they ordered. A sort of disclaimer to prevent returns or complaints.

Please note, the process here is trimming, and is applied to the print - cropping is applied to the image itself to isolate a particular part of the picture or to remove undesired image content around the main subject.
