Ruder von Schiffen weisen bei einem Propellerantrieb heute oft eine so genannte Costa-Birne auf. Die so genannte Costa-Birne oder auch Propulsionsbirne dient dazu, dass in Verlängerung der Propellerachse im Bereich des Ruderblattes eine Wölbung ausgebildet ist, die birnenförmig oder zeppelinförmig ausgebildet ist und einen Strömungskörper darstellt. Dieser Strömungskörper hat den Zweck, dass das Gesamtprofil der Nabe soweit verlängert wird, dass eine nur geringe Verwirbelung des abströmenden Wassers entsteht.
