German term or phrase: sportscar rally terms: starrer Durchtrieb
"Ich bin überrascht, wie leicht das Auto trotz starrem Durchtrieb einlenkt."
(viscous coupling system VCS?)

English translation:your call
Explanation:

In these references, it looks like what I would call "fixed/straight/non-compensating power transmission" or "fixed/straight/non-compensating power transfer",a permanently fixed or locked differential (a paradox I know). I do not mean a differential lock or "Sperre" but no differential action at all. A simple pinion gear and bevel (ring) gear setup with one shaft. Not a standard differential.

http://www.porsche356.de/rennbild12.htm

"Kraftübertragung: Viergang-Getriebe mit starrem Durchtrieb"

http://trucktrial.grade.de/spezial/ff0997/ff0997.htm

At this glossary John Deere calls it a "locked or solid differential", which is also a paradox:

http://www.bestbid.com/glossary.html

"LOCKED DIFFERENTIAL - Sometimes referred to as a solid differential. Both wheels are mechanically tied together. Slippery conditions under one wheel have no effect on tractive effort from the other wheel. The disadvantage is tire scuffing and wear during cornering."

JD also mentions a:

"NO-SPIN DIFFERENTIAL - A type of differential design that uses automotive "no-spin" technology to replace bevel gears, bevel pinions and their shafts. This design achieves 100 percent lock-up and transmits positive drive to both axles."

Here's yet another English term -- this one from the client, saying the same thing: >>>"Starrer Durchtrieb" means "no-slip differential" (which is not used in passenger cars but they did it in that racing car).<<< For your list :) --- Also a few Web references including both racecars and ordinary SUVs. Some references (Misubishi Pinin) are for the same model but on both sides of the language interface. Note the references to "viscous coupling (VCS)", which appear in analogous places in the English descriptions to "starrer Durchtrieb" in the German. Could this be HOW they achieve the no-slip differentiioal? (If so, it sounds like they have a little give there anyway. Viscous means less than totally 'starr'.) Thanks also for the added explanation!

The Pajero Pinin’s SS4-i 4WD system is part of its Pajero heritage and gives it all-terrain ability unrivalled in its class. This compact system delivers 4WD torque on-demand via a VCU (viscous coupling unit).

However, most owners will probably never utilise the high and low ratio transfer box, the SS4-i four-mode lightweight 4WD system with torque-on-demand via a viscous coupling unit,

I am sure everybody knows this but just in case...

Explanation:
I am sure everybody knows this but just in case... What does differential action or the lack of differential action have to do with steering? If a car has no standard differential, both driving wheels push straight ahead with equal power on a good road. This tends to keep the car moving straight ahead too, making it difficult to turn left or right. When the beast does begin to turn, this causes excess drive tire wear or scuffing. With a standard differential, as soon as you start to turn, the inside drive wheel slows down and the outside drive wheel speeds up, helping you around the turn and keeping tire wear even.
