Tech/Engineering
German term or phrase: Positionierung
"Hier kann eine Positionierung nach System-, Anlagenbereichen oder lediglich einer laufenden Nummerierung vorgenommen werden."
We are still dealing with the "Mängelliste" here.
The sentence refers to the first column which has the heading "Positionsnummer" in German. The entries below are 1., 2., 3. etc. sometimes followed by an abbreviation for the machine where the respective problem occurs. I have difficulties with the terms "Positionierung" and "Positionsnummer".

English translation:itemized according to
Explanation:
as a "position" in a list is normally an item and also problems are often itemized this might fit quite well. However if it more important to get over the idea of categorization then 'sorted" would fit the bill better

Explanation:
Not all obvious translations are wrong
:-)

Why not 'POSITIONING' (Positionierung)and 'POSITION('s NUMBER)' (Positionsnummer)? Seems clear to me.

ordering

Explanation:
This word has other marketing meanings but here it simply means an ordering. Positionsnummer is the (ordinal) number of a thing, i.e. 1= first, 2= second, 365 = 365th. Your sentence says that "the ordering can be chosen according to the system, or the Angagenbereichen (whatever that is in your context), or simply by assigning numbers as a running index (any way you want to)." here: "ordering"

Explanation:
I agree that sometimes obvious translations are just what you need, but in this case, positionining has more to do with market positions of competitors etc.
However, what this passage refers to is a simple ordering of items according to the user's needs, so ordering sounds fine to me.

can be sorted according to...

Explanation:
...or can be entered/located on the list according to... depending on whether the action refers to the intial entry of subsequent sorting. Note that
I'd change from the noun to a verb form unless context prohibits.

Item number

Explanation:
G'Day Michael, I agree with Natalie that this is commonly referred to as "Item Numbers" in English. This also applies to parts list and BOM's, for example. HTH wolfgang
