German term or phrase: selbständig
I'm having trouble deciding whether to use "automatic" or "independent" in the following context: "Kolbenpumpe mit einem Zylinder, einem selbstständig schliessendem Einlassventil ... und daß der Kolben mit dem Filterkolben ein selbstständig schließendes Auslaßventil ausbildet."

In such a context I would have liked to have seen something like "selbsttätig" as "self-actuating" but the writer specifically uses "selbstständig" in the text. I have trouble imagining something is such a coordinated piece of machinery as being "independent."

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Harold

English translation:automatic / self-actuating
Explanation:
Hallo Harold,

In your context I would use automatic or "self-actuating". I don't think the author was aware of any specific implication and meant "selbsttätig". In a technical context "selbständig" is a synonym for "selbsttätig", in fact it is more common.

Cheers
Claudia
