Tech/Engineering
German term or phrase: Vollmaterialien
I am translating a company profile which begins like this:
Die traditionsbewußte Eisen- und Stahlindustrie setzt zunehmend auf Innovation. Schließlich sind spezielle Oberflächenbearbeitungen und Behandlungen zum Verschleiß- und Korrosionsschutz moderner Bauteile gewinnbringende Alternativen zur Verwendung hochwertiger Vollmaterialien.
I do not know what is meant by 'Vollmaterialien'. Translating it literally as 'full materials' does not mean much to me. Any ideas?

English translation:solid materials
Explanation:
This is the definition given in Cornelsen's Tech WB. They are making a distinction between high-quality (and thus relatively expensive) solid materials (ie, homogeneouus) and those with surface treatments or coataings that allow lower-quality materials to have the same surface characeteristics.

Explanation:
Instead of using a solid piece of steel or other expensive material for a component, a less expensive material is used, and the surface is then treated to prevent/reduce wear and corrosion.

That's what it means.
However, I can't think of a good English term, "pure grade material" comes to mind. See if that works for you.

Hope this helps
