"Bei gerammten oder eingerüttelten Bohlträgern oder Spundbohlen muß außerdem
sichergestellt sein, daß beim Durchfahren tragfähiger Schichten die erforderliche Pfropfenbildung stattfindet."

With this type of pile (usually steel tube or box piles), "vanes" are welded along the axis of the pile, at the bottom end. As far as I can figure, this is to increase stability (bearing capacity) and is not applicable for soft soils.
