hot shoe or flash socket ...
Explanation:
The 'thingy' on the camera that provides a direct contact to the flash unit is called a "hot shoe". The more generic term would be flash socket or flash bracket. You may have to play around a bit with the phrasing, possibly s.th. like
hot shoe with a center contact socket
or
flash socket with center contact
or
flash bracket with center contact socket ...
See what fits. Also check out some of the URLs below (from many), you might be able to quite a bit of useful information.

If your electronic flash unit does not have a direct contact "hot shoe", connect its synchronizing cable to the camera flash socket. www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/olympusom1... www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/olympusom1...

Coming onto the market within this model year is another digital camera with a socket for an external flash.

hot shoe (but please be careful with the use of the term)

Explanation:
http://www.shortcourses.com/choosing/19.htm

"Hot shoe: A clip on the top of the camera that attaches a flash unit and provides an electrical link to synchronize the flash with the camera shutter."

Be careful! Do not use the word "socket", there is no "socket" in a "Blitzschuh".

Do not use the phrase "hot shoe with center contact" because all "hot shoes" have a center contact or else they would not be "hot". If the "shoe" is only there to hold the flash unit but has no electronic synchronization link to the camera electronics, it is then just called a "shoe".

The "shoe" is the clip that the "foot" of the flash unit slides into.

If the shoe is not "hot", there will be a cable plug socket somewhere else on the camera to accept the plug on a cable from the flash unit.
