German term or phrase: Bedienung
I usually understand "Bedienung" to mean "operation" or "service", but in the following 2 sentences I am not sure if this the translation for Bedienung should be "Operator". See below:

Über eine Bedienung müssen auch die Schaltspiele korrigiert, bzw. zurück gesetzt werden können.

Die Protokollausgabe erfolgt durch Bedienung.

English translation:manually
Explanation:
literally, Bedienung does mean an operator or human does it. But it doesn't stipulate whether it is done with a switch, or just what. This concept is very frequently rendered in English as manually. E.g. "It must be possible to change or restore them manually," or "The protocol output is done manually."

I kept my original "by the operator" in that case. Thanks

operation mechanism

Explanation:
"Bedienung" in this context refers to an operation mechanism, like a switch or a lever, for example.
"Operation mechanism" is kind of a generic term. So you could either use this term or, in case your context provides further information, use a specific term, like e.g. switch.

control [element ]

Explanation:
I'd use something like "control [element]" or, if it is an entire panel, "control panel".

A text I'm currently working on refers to "controls", these are the various knobs and buttons for selecting the operating mode, power, etc., and that would seem to fit quite well into your context.
