German term or phrase: Lastenheft vs. Pflichtenheft
"Specs" seems to be the only English word for both terms. How should Pflichtenheft be translated?...

Here are two sentences where both are defined in terms of streetcar manufacture:

Das Lastenheft enthaellt alle Anforderungen und Vorgaben des Kunden an das Gesamtfahrzeug.

Im Fahrzeug-Pflichtenheft wird beschrieben, wie die Aufteilung der im Lastenheft geforderten Funktion auf einzelne Systemkomponenten erfolgt

Explanation:

Pflichtenheft = bidder('s)/tenderer('s)/engineering specification(s)
Vom Auftragnehmer erarbeitete Realisierungsvorgaben aufgrund der Umsetzung des Lastenheftes. Im Pflichtenheft wird definiert, wie und womit die Forderungen des Lastenheftes zu realisieren sind.

Lastenheft = customer('s)/tender specification(s)

Here are most of the answers, explanations and references from January and May 2000, that uel was referring to. Tom's reference from t-online seems to be the easiest to understand:

Tom Funke:

Answer: customer specification; engineering specification

Explanation:

The key difference between these terms (which can of course be translated in a variety of other ways) is that Lastenheft sums up the customer's requirements, while Pflichtenheft sums up the contractor's resulting (engineering) obligations.
DEFINITIONS:
LASTENHEFT: (customer specification)

Answer: Specifications

Explanation:

They both mean Specifications - the manual that tells the project manager or similar what the client's requirements are (the engineer's 'duties') that need to be fulfilled.

E.g. cf Routledge Technical Dictionary

Dierk:

answer: requirements specification

Explanation:

The requirements is optional.

Uel:

answer: see below

Explanation:

Pflichtenheft = requirements specifications; Lastenheft = 1. statement of work (SOW) pr technical data package [military procurement]; or = 2. declaration of design and performance [UK,technology]; or = 3. equipment requirement (ER) [materials]; or = 4. project specification [Softwaretechnik]. The above from Bundessprachenamt, Microfiches. Schäfer, 5. Aufl., gives 1. tender specifications, 2. cahier des charges -how's that for a good English term!- (i.e. enthält Einzelheiten einer Ausschreibung); 3. performance specification [Ind.Eng.] or 4. software specifications [EDV]. According to Schäfer, Pflichtenheft and Lastenheft are synomymous. Maybe this will give you some choices from which to pick. Good luck.

wardpeter:

Answer: Specification

Explanation:

I would suggest that the text is saying that the requirements should be listed in a specification document of some sort.

salmond:

Answer: detailed report

Explanation:

Given that a Lastenheft is a detailed list of requirements for the project, I would probably explain rather than translate in this case. The Lastenheft would probably be specifications plus the reasons for them which includes the gathering of all facts and giving the decision makers a clear overview of the situation so that they have a solid platform to base their decisions on.

mccrosky:

Answer: Lastenheft = "tender specifications"

Explanation:

list of specifications or conditions for bidding on projects.

towns313:

Answer: specs sheet(s)

Explanation:

This is really no different than anyone else's answer, but it might help when rendering the sentence into something that flows well in English.

wwagner:

Answer: specification -or- set of specifications

Explanation:

depending on the full context, Lastenheft can be any of the following:
a) specification;
b) tender specification;
c) specifications;
d) specification sheet;
e) contract specification;
f) contract document;
g) tender document;
h) standard conditions
i) contract;
j) contract conditions;
k) product specification ..... in the quoted passage I would use a) or b).

Specification?

Explanation:
Routledge gives 'specification' for Pflichtenheft, but nothing under Lastenheft. Could Pflichtenheft be the actual specifications for manufacture and Lastenheft be along the lines of a specification not actually used for manufacture, ie more of a brief from the customer as to what the finished product should achieve? This is just a guess based on the context you give, hope it's of some help!

design specification vs. functional specification

Explanation:
To some degree the two are interchangeable, but my source proposed the above answer:
Lastenheft = design specification
but also: specs, specifications
or performance specifications
Pflichtenheft = functional specification
or specification

performance specifications / tender specifications

Explanation:
This is turning into a perennial favorite. See also the following two queries:
http://www.proz.com/h.php3?bs=1&id=3106

where you should find quite a bit of information.

Siemens lists the following:
Pflichtenheft n (z.B. für Installationsbus)
performance specification

Lastenheft n
specifications of work and services, tender specifications, specifications n pl

Schäfer, Hyperbook Wirtschaftsenglisch, lists:
Lastenheft n
(com) tender specifications
– specification
– cahier des charges
(ie, enthält Einzelheiten e–r Ausschreibung)
(IndE) performance specification
(EDV) software specifications (cf, Pflichtenheft)
Pflichtenheft n

contract specifications ; requirements specification

Explanation:
According to the EuroDicAutom, you woudl appear ot be right to hesitate a bit as they do appear to be different. I am no specialist in German. I stopped at A-level... but here's what I found :

PFLICHTENHEFT :

German Term Pflichtenheft
English Term target specification

German Term Geraetekenngroessen;
Systemkenngroessen;
Pflichtenheft
English Term system specification

German Term 1)Anforderungsspezifikation;
2)Pflichtenheft;
3)Produktdefinition
English Term requirements specification

LASTENHEFT :

German Term Spezifikation(1);
Verdingungsunterlage(3);
Lastenheft
English Term specification(1);
contract document(2)

German Term Leistungsverzeichnis;
Ausschreibungsbedingungen;
Lastenheft;
Ausschreibungsunterlagen
English Term specifications;
specifications sheet;
contract specification;
contract document;
tender document;
standard conditions and contract;
product specification

Given the wider context, you may find that there are sufficient possibilities here to choose from.
