"Eine Besonderheit von Zirkonoxid liegt darin, dass es die Fähigkeit besitzt, entstehende Risse im Gefüge sozusagen 'zuzuklemmen' und dadurch das Risswachstum in bestimmten Größenordnungen deutlich zu reduzieren, was als sogenannte Umwandlungsverstärkung bezeichnet wird und ein Grund für die hohen initialen Festigkeiten sowie zum Teil der ausgezeichneten Langzeitstabilität ist."

Yes, that is one sentence! But I think I've pretty well got it sussed, except for "Umwandlungsverstärkung", which I can't find anywhere. Does this word have a standard translation, and if so, what, please? TIA for your help.

Explanation:
obviously, something happens "chemically" during the start and the finish of the process. And during this "transisiton", the ceramic is prevented from "cracking" (ref.: im Gefuege sozusagen zuzuklemmen... Risswachstum...zu reduzieren)
Hope I never need dentures... ;-))

The reason I have only awarded this answer a 1 is that I have managed to discover the correct term - it's "transformation toughening"! So this answer was incorrect, though a reasonable attempt. I do thank you for your contribution, though.
