German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering
German term or phrase: CNC- gesteuerte Werkzeugmaschinen
My third (and hopefully last) question regarding the qualification of a machinist (Maschinenschlosser). He was working on one of these.

English translation:CNC machine tools
Explanation:
CNC already means 'computer numerically controlled', so 'controlled' is redundant. It is appropriate in the German, but not in English (see the refs).

Also, although 'machinist' exists, the usual English name for a Maschinenschlosser is 'fitter' (or 'machine filler' or 'engine fitter' See for example 'www.jobschain.com/J332TOI0305.htm, as well as Langenscheidt or Cassell's dictionaries.

The best alround explanation, thanks. But it was the first quick reply that helped my mental block - so the translation went out "dual-controlled".

CNC-controlled tool machines

Explanation:
This is pretty straight forward: CNC (computer numerical control) is an English term and thus stays as is. Steuerung is control and Werkzeugmaschinen are tool machines. See this website for usage: <http://www.slhome.com/hare.htm>

CNC-controlled machine tools

Explanation:
At first I thought Dierk's answer was quite OK but then I thought: "A tool machine should produce tools. But a CNC-controlled machine produces parts (screws, pins etc.)". So I went chcking:
Ernst and Engström both told me the:
'machine tool' for 'Werkzeugmachine' and "natürlich stimmt es".

redundancy

Explanation:
Sometimes, our job is just to translate, not to correct the original text. This may be such a case. The "controlled: may be redundant, but to some, just "CNC" may not be sufficiently obvious which is why I suggested CNC-controlled.
