German term or phrase: Gespärre
In a paper dealing with oil treatment facilities:

Any help appreciated - can't find this word in any of my dictionaries; could it be a typo for "Gesperre"?

rafters
Explanation:
No, it's not a typo.
"Gespärre" is listed as "Sparrenwerk" / "rafters" in Brandstetter. I initially assumed that the context was completely wrong. However, I thought I'd double- check in my "Dictionary of Pressure Vessel and Piping Technology" and, lo and behold, there IS such a thing as "rafters" in a tank. And "verbundene Gespärre", by the way, are "braced rafters".

Good luck,

Steve Martin

Explanation:
I also could not find the term. As you suggested, I do believe the word is misspelt, and that it should be "Gesperre". But do verify with your customer, if you can.

Good luck!
