German term or phrase: Untere Mittelklasse (automobile)
This comes between a small car and a medium size car. What do you call this in English?
Many thanks!

lower standard-size category etc.
Explanation:
untere Mittelklasse (Pkw - car) : lower medium-size category, lower mid-size catagory, lower standard-size category (US). (Wyhlidal, Kraftfahrzeugtechnisches Wörterbuch ISBN 3 923195 01 X. 2145 pages)

In terms of common US usage though, no ordinary mortal would be likely to use these terms: Among the great unwashed, anything smaller than "mid-size" or standard-size tends to be called a _compact [car]_ , because a SMALL car is called a _subcompact_.

Technically though, these terms also exist in German, (Kompaktwagen/-klasse; Subcompakt = Kleinwagen/-auto).

Thank you,
Actually I already had to send it off. I basically used small-to-mid-sized car. The editor will probably
have something better in mind. "Kleinwagen" I left literally as "small car" because it didn't say
Kompaktwagen and there were only those three catogories (klein, unter-mittel and mittel), plus
"Family Van"

bantam car (in the lower middle-class range)

Explanation:
Personally, I prefer simply bantam (which is between minis and light 6 cylinder cars) without mentioning class, as it's not very common in English.
