German term or phrase: selbschützend
I have difficulty with the term "selbstschützend". It is related to welding. Here are two examples of sentences:

"Selbstschützende Fülldrahtelektrode für das Metall-Lichtbogenschweißen".

"Selbstschützender Fülldraht, verschweißbar in allen Positionen."

"Selbschützend" is perhaps related to "Schutzgas" (i.e. inert gas, which is the gas used to shield off electrodes and welding rods during TIG welding (tungsten inert-gas welding). Or is this a 'fausse piste'?

Anyway, thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions,

coated electrodes
Explanation:
I think you are indeed on a fausse piste with thinking about the protective gases used in some types of welding (MIG and TIG).
Coated electrodes deposit a slag on the top of the molten weld metal to protect it from the air,and hence prevent any reactions, particularly with oxygen, which would produce non-metallic deposits in the weld metal, which weaken the weld.
