Explanation:
It all comes down to what you think that the author is referring to. A gas station in US English is a filling station, where you can fill the gas (petrol) tank of your car. However, I doubt that gas leak detectors are normally used in such stations, and besides, I think that author is talking about (natural) gas rather then petrol.

The following refs have a picture of an example of what is being referred to (I think), with the text in German and English -- but I don't think the translation is correct.

The following ref is a US site that uses the term 'stations' with regard to pipeline facilities. My guess is that 'pipeline station' is the general term, and it would be more specifically qualified if a particular type of station is meant (eg a distribution station, pumping station).
